This page lists the ranges Foodini accepts for layer height and print speed, the values it uses by default for each nozzle, and where to change them. Both are set per ingredient, so different ingredients in the same dish can use different values.
At a glance
| Setting | Range |
| Layer height (Distance Between Layers) | 0.1 mm to 50 mm |
| Vertical positioning resolution | 0.0003 mm (3,200 steps per mm) |
| Print speed | 3.3 mm/s up to 150 mm/s (up to 188 mm/s with Printing Speed at 125%) |
| First layer nozzle height | 0 mm to 100 mm |
| Extra nozzle height, set in print preview | 0 mm to 50 mm |
Any value inside these ranges can be used. For example, layers from 0.2 mm to 1 mm and print speeds up to 50 mm/s are all within range.
Layer height
The layer height is the vertical distance between one layer of a print and the next. In Foodini it is called Distance Between Layers and can be set anywhere from 0.1 mm to 50 mm. Foodini positions the nozzle vertically in steps of 0.0003 mm, so it prints the value you set exactly.
Thinner layers give smoother sides and finer detail but take longer to print, since there are more of them. The ingredient also has to hold its shape at that thickness.
Default layer height for each nozzle:
| Nozzle | Default layer height |
| 0.8 mm | 0.8 to 1 mm |
| 1.5 mm | 1.2 to 1.4 mm |
| 4 mm | 3.4 to 3.5 mm |
| 8 mm | 7.5 mm |
The exact default depends on the ingredient.
Nozzle height for the first layer
Two settings decide how high the nozzle starts:
- First Layer Nozzle Height (per ingredient, 0 to 100 mm) — the height of the first layer above the printing surface.
- Nozzle Extra Height (in print preview, 0 to 50 mm) — raises the whole print, for example to print on top of something already on the plate.
Print speed
The print speed is how fast the nozzle moves while it lays down ingredient. Each ingredient has its own Print Speed, entered in mm per minute, from 200 mm/min (3.3 mm/s) upward.
The printer head has a top speed of 150 mm/s (9,000 mm/min). A Print Speed above the top speed prints at the top speed.
Default print speed for each nozzle:
| Nozzle | Default print speed |
| 0.8 mm | 6.7 to 10 mm/s |
| 1.5 mm | 20 to 58 mm/s |
| 4 mm | 100 mm/s up to the top speed |
| 8 mm | the top speed |
Larger nozzles lay down more ingredient per line, so they are set to move faster.
Changing the top speed
Settings › Advanced › Printing Speed sets the top speed, from 63% to 125%. At 100% the top speed is 150 mm/s; at 125% it is about 188 mm/s, and at 63% about 94 mm/s. It only affects ingredients whose Print Speed is above the top speed; slower ingredients print at their own speed whatever this is set to.
Where to change these settings
- For one ingredient in a dish: in the dish editor, tap the ingredient, tap the arrow at the bottom right to open Advanced Settings, and change Distance Between Layers, Print Speed or First Layer Nozzle Height. Each field shows its allowed range.
- For an ingredient you reuse: save it as a custom ingredient with these values. See Custom Ingredients.
- Extra nozzle height: in print preview, under Nozzle Extra Height.
- Top speed: Settings › Advanced › Printing Speed. See Settings (Foodini 2.0).
